Political Philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau Might Have The Answer To 'What is Good Art' / 'How To Make Good Art'

Writer: Anna LevitskayaAnna Levitskaya

Art Should Tell The Truth! Not become a beautiful deception...

Can you believe that one of the greatest thinkers of the Enlightenment said that the Enlightenment was bad?!

Jean Jacques Rousseau warned us that Art creates distractions rather than revealing the truth.

It’s not enlightening us it’s just entertaining us.

BUT, he gave us 3 solutions:

  1. TELL THE TRUTH: Make art based on real experience over artificial grandeur. Don’t just serve the elite - reflect the genuine struggles, joys, and truths of life.

  2. Focus on authenticity: Art should come from an honest connection with human emotion.

  3. Rooted in Nature: explore nature and personal reflection rather than intellectual showmanship.

It’s probably as shocking now as it was in the 18th century!

Let me know what you think!

“Has the restoration of the sciences and the arts contributed to the purification or to the corruption of morality? This is the matter we have to examine. What side should I take on this question? That, gentlemen, which suits an honourable man who knows nothing and who does not, for that reason, think any less of himself.” - Jean Jacques Rousseau
